WATERSPRING: Assessing water related risks to the industry and other stakeholders in a watershed
Samenvatting project
The production processes of Kimberly-Clark require considerable amounts of water. Being one of the big water users among other beneficial uses such as drinking water production, agriculture, ecology and recreation Kimberly-Clark want to take responsibility for sustainable water resource management in regions showing a risk of among others
water scarcity or water quality. Water related risks such as water scarcity or water quality deterioration should be assessed to ensure sufficient water of good quality for now and in the future. This is both of mutual interest for and a joint responsibility of all relevant stakeholders in a river basin at risk.
The aim of this project is to develop a user-friendly dashboard to visualize water related risks in watersheds where the industry is also active. It will provide information to all beneficial users on the risks and opportunities related to the water use and level of water stress at the scale of their watershed. Both the current situation and the situation under different socio-economic and climate change scenarios will be assessed as well as potential consequences. It will support the industrial sector and other water users in the watershed in anticipating the future changes in water availability and gain insight into the possibilities to improve the resilience and adapt to the new situation in a sustainable way. As test cases two watersheds in Colombia were selected where two Kimberly-Clark plants were identified as at-risk and where Deltares has gained valuable expertise in the past years. In close cooperation with local NGO’s authorities and other relevant stakeholders scenarios for water availability will be assessed in the Medellín basin near Barbosa and in the Cauca basin near Cali both in Colombia. Results of these two cases will feed into the dashboard. The dashboard will be user-friendly publicly available based on data from local national and global scale and present indicators at the watershed level and per sector. It will support stakeholders in a watershed in:-Becoming aware of the current and future water related risks -Developing scenarios for sustainable water management-Assessing alternative potential water resources to serve all beneficial water uses.The aim of the project is consistent with the objectives of KIC Water and ICT and KIC watermanagement.

Uitgevoerde acties
The following activities will be carried out:•Workshop with KC to discuss main aim and important requirements for the dashboard agree on concept and discuss data availability and indicators•Organization of two workshops in Colombia with local authorities NGO’s and other stakeholders to discuss current water risks and possible scenario’s (climate change socio-economic regulations and policies) for that area and the impact of those scenario’s on those risks •Analysis of current water availability and water related risks for the stakeholders and downstream ecosystems for the two watersheds in Colombia•Identification of future scenarios in terms of climate change socio-economic developments changes in policies and regulation•Analysis of future water availability and water scarcity-related risks for two time horizons including risk of changing regulation•Develop conceptual design of dashboard and requirements•Integrate data results of the watershed water risk assessment into the dashboard•Organization of workshop preferably at a plant in Europe to present discuss and agree on conceptual design of dashboard •Development of dashboard •Communication strategy to present and share the dashboard•Project management.
Innovativiteit
In this project the innovation lies mostly in the coupling of data from different scales (global national local and mill scale) the processing of these data and the visualization of current and future water related risks in an understandable way based on scientifically sound concepts. The tool will bring stakeholders in a watershed one step further in their capability of anticipating on future water related risks.
Valorisatie
Information of the project and its outputs will be disseminated through the following activities.
The dashboard will be available to other sectors through the webplatform
Communication strategy will be developed in collaboration with the corporate communication department of KC and Deltares to disseminate results at the right time using the right media; for example an interview with KC about the project to be published through various channels;
Two workshops in Colombia with all stakeholders in the watershed;
The approach for the two case studies in Colombia will be used as a generic approach for other watersheds beginning with watersheds where KC is active;
Intellectueel eigendom
