Innovatief Sediment Management voor Havens
Samenvatting project
The navigation in ports and waterways must be safeguarded by maintenance dredging, i.e. removing of deposited sediments. As maintenance dredging and relocation of these deposits can be highly expensive, port authorities seek for tailor-made solutions to reduce the costs and at the same time guarantee safe navigation. We will consider several options for reducing dredging costs:
SHORT-TERM: dredge more efficiently & reduce sediment return flow
LONG-TERM: modify intervention protocol
Water injection dredging (WID) is an example of a technique to reduce dredging costs on the short term. However, to avoid additional siltation in the vicinity and/or strong return flows, WID should be applied in combination with a favorable bed slope, ebb currents or/and a sediment trap, from which sediment can be dredged more efficiently. The project will be linked to SURICATES, which is aiming to optimize locations and conditions at which sediment is released.
Revising the criterium for nautical bottom is an example of modification of intervention protocols. Instead of removing sediment, its presence is accepted as vessels may navigate through fluid mud layers. Local sediment conditioning of mud by WID may be required for sailing through it. Also, good insight into the thickness, extent and rheological properties of the fluid mud layers is required.
Products are:
- Technical reports and scientific publications

Doel van het project
The goal of the project is to deliver the multidisciplinary knowledge which are necessary to successfully employ quantitatively assess and generically improve the current maintenance strategies at the PoR. In particular the results of the project can be further used for optimizing and testing novel water injection dredging scenarios at the PoR.The project is aiming to deliver the following:- Generated system knowledge: spatial and temporal variability of sediment at PoR- Improved current (flow) model- Validated sediment model on fluid mud dynamics- WID actions model- Proven working background of measuring devices: the Graviprobe the RheotuneThe developed models can be applied for optimizing the dredging maintenance inventory of effects of changes in infrastructure and management of dredging maintenance estimation of transport paths and final use of dredged sediment occurrence and thickness of fluid mud layers in the waterways and for research on mud transport. These applications are in line with related projects such as CoVadem (DEL081) and SURICATES.
Motivatie
The navigation in ports and waterways has to be safeguarded by maintenance dredging removing sediments deposited by tide river flows and currents. The volumes of dredged material have substantially increased over the last 5 years. As maintenance dredging and relocation of these deposits can be highly expensive port authorities seek for tailor-made solutions to reduce the costs and at the same time guarantee safe navigation in ports and waterways. In a previous TKI Deltatechnology projects (DEL048) the return flow of dredged sediment from the sea to the port mouth was examined. This project is followed by another TKI Deltatechnology projects ‘Modellering lokale slibdynamiek en aanslibbing Maasmond (MoMa)’ (DEL089) that concerns the local sediment transport and sedimentation in the port itself. The current TKI proposal integrates the developed knowledge and bring new aspects such as system knowledge more in-depth modelling of fluid mud dynamics innovative in-situ monitoring methods water injection dredging and sediment trapping.
Uitgevoerde acties
The planning for experimental and industrial parts of the project is the following:
For Experimental research:
2019: Validate the working principle of in-situ devices (the Graviprobe and the Rheotune) compare to other available methods tools in laboratory check the sensitivity and repeatability of the tools improve the applicability of the tools by linking their output to acoustic measurements.
For Industrial research:
2019: Build the system knowledge by conducting 4 monitoring campaigns (data collection) develop/advance the modelling of sediment dynamics analyse the samples study the sensitivity. Monitoring campaigns data collection and interpretation will be conducted together with the PoR. The PoR contributes in-kind for this part of the research.
2020: calibrate and validate the models study the sensitivity apply various WID cases at different port areas write final reports and scientific publications. The calibration and validation of the models will be done with the PoR’s experts. The PoR contributes in-kind for this research.
Innovativiteit
The innovative aspects relate among other things to the transition of fluid mud layers to the consolidated phase. Anther novel aspect is putting into perspective of sediment flows due to water injection dredging compared to the natural sediment flows and the coupling with detailed in-situ measurements of fluid mud layers developments and sedimentation.
