Nieuw project gestart: Blue Harvest; Nature Based innovatie in de Golfregio
The Blue Harvest project focuses on the increasing salinization along the coasts and deltas of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, caused by rising sea levels and freshwater extraction. Dutch methods from the Zeeland delta and Texel serve as inspiration for preventing salinization and cultivating salt-tolerant crops. In 2023, Wageningen Research conducted a feasibility study in Oman, using Miscanthus as a buffer against salinization and as a source of local raw materials for construction. The project aims for sustainable food security and climate resilience, emphasizing smart water usage, reduced heat stress, and renewable resource cultivation. Efficient CO2 sequestration by Miscanthus enhances the economic impact. Beyond the Gulf region, the project serves as a scalable model for other areas facing similar ecological and agricultural challenges.
